Waste Bin Void Share Correction Tool

Calculate waste bin void share correction from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Loading tool…

Description

Return solidVolume = measuredVolume*(1-voidFraction) and estimatedMass = solidVolume*solidDensity.

Mass-based environmental quantities depend on their basis: gross versus tare-corrected mass, wet versus dry solids, or material versus void volume. A ratio or density conversion is meaningful only when those bases and units agree.

Return solidVolume = measuredVolume*(1-voidFraction) and estimatedMass = solidVolume*solidDensity.

When to use this tool

Use Waste Bin Void Share Correction when reconciling supplied environmental masses, solids fractions or material volumes.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter measuredVolume, voidFraction, solidDensity. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read solidVolume, estimatedMass. Use the output convention below.

Require nonnegative measuredVolume and solidDensity and voidFraction in [0,1]. Return solidVolume = measuredVolume*(1-voidFraction) and estimatedMass = solidVolume*solidDensity. Density must be mass per volume of the nonvoid solid on the chosen unit basis.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • A voidFraction of one gives zero solid volume and mass. This assumes the supplied void fraction and solid density describe the bin contents; it does not measure compaction, moisture or changing material composition.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use measured density, method-specific moisture procedures and uncertainty analysis where simple homogeneous-material assumptions are insufficient.
