Waste Sort Contamination Mass Share Tool

Calculate waste sort contamination mass share from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Description

Set netMass = grossMass-tareMass; contaminantMass must be between zero and netMass.

Mass-based environmental quantities depend on their basis: gross versus tare-corrected mass, wet versus dry solids, or material versus void volume. A ratio or density conversion is meaningful only when those bases and units agree.

Set netMass = grossMass-tareMass; contaminantMass must be between zero and netMass.

When to use this tool

Use Waste Sort Contamination Mass Share when reconciling supplied environmental masses, solids fractions or material volumes.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter contaminantMass, grossMass, tareMass. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read netMass, contaminationFraction. Use the output convention below.

Require nonnegative tareMass and grossMass > tareMass. Set netMass = grossMass-tareMass; contaminantMass must be between zero and netMass. Return contaminationFraction = contaminantMass/netMass, a fraction rather than a percent.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • All masses must refer to the same sampled material and mass unit. Sorting definitions, sampling representativeness and waste acceptance standards are not assessed.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use measured density, method-specific moisture procedures and uncertainty analysis where simple homogeneous-material assumptions are insufficient.
