Filtercake Moisture Solids Volume Term Tool

Additive solid and water component volume, excluding trapped air and volume contraction.

Loading tool…

Description

Compute dryMass = wetMass*(1-moistureFraction), waterMass = wetMass*moistureFraction and componentVolume = dryMass/solidDensity+waterMass/waterDensity.

Mass-based environmental quantities depend on their basis: gross versus tare-corrected mass, wet versus dry solids, or material versus void volume. A ratio or density conversion is meaningful only when those bases and units agree.

Compute dryMass = wetMass*(1-moistureFraction), waterMass = wetMass*moistureFraction and componentVolume = dryMass/solidDensity+waterMass/waterDensity.

When to use this tool

Use Filtercake Moisture Solids Volume Term when reconciling supplied environmental masses, solids fractions or material volumes.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter wetMass, moistureFraction, solidDensity, waterDensity. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read dryMass, waterMass, componentVolume. Use the output convention below.

Require nonnegative wetMass, moistureFraction in [0,1] and positive solidDensity and waterDensity. Compute dryMass = wetMass*(1-moistureFraction), waterMass = wetMass*moistureFraction and componentVolume = dryMass/solidDensity+waterMass/waterDensity.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Moisture is a wet-mass fraction. The volume sums ideal component volumes without voids, compression or nonadditive mixing, and is not automatically the bulk filtercake volume.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use measured density, method-specific moisture procedures and uncertainty analysis where simple homogeneous-material assumptions are insufficient.
