Treatment Bypass Mass Term Tool

Integrate a constant explicitly supplied bypass stream load in compatible units without regulatory interpretation.

Loading tool…

Description

Return bypassMass = bypassFlow*untreatedConcentration*duration.

A pollutant load combines concentration with a compatible flow, volume or activity factor. A load rate has amount-per-time units, whereas an integrated load also includes duration; concentration differences alone do not describe removal when flows differ.

Return bypassMass = bypassFlow*untreatedConcentration*duration.

When to use this tool

Use Treatment Bypass Mass Term when checking one supplied emission, transport or treatment mass-balance contribution.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter bypassFlow, untreatedConcentration, duration. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read bypassMass. Use the output convention below.

Require nonnegative bypassFlow, untreatedConcentration and duration. Return bypassMass = bypassFlow*untreatedConcentration*duration. Choose flow, concentration and time units so the product gives the intended mass; for example m³/hour, kg/m³ and hours give kg.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • This assumes constant untreated concentration and bypass flow over the duration. It neither detects bypass events nor establishes treatment efficiency, discharge permission or a complete pollutant inventory.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Integrate changing measurements over time and reconcile storage and reactions when a constant-condition product is insufficient.
