Carbon Stock Soil Depth One Layer Tool

Calculate carbon stock soil depth one layer from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Loading tool…

Description

Return carbonMass = area*thickness*bulkDensity*carbonFraction*(1-coarseFragmentFraction).

Mass-based environmental quantities depend on their basis: gross versus tare-corrected mass, wet versus dry solids, or material versus void volume. A ratio or density conversion is meaningful only when those bases and units agree.

Return carbonMass = area*thickness*bulkDensity*carbonFraction*(1-coarseFragmentFraction).

When to use this tool

Use Carbon Stock Soil Depth One Layer when reconciling supplied environmental masses, solids fractions or material volumes.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter area, thickness, bulkDensity, carbonFraction, coarseFragmentFraction. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read carbonMass. Use the output convention below.

Require nonnegative area, thickness and bulkDensity and carbonFraction and coarseFragmentFraction in [0,1]. Return carbonMass = area*thickness*bulkDensity*carbonFraction*(1-coarseFragmentFraction). Use coherent length and density units and enter fractions rather than percentages.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • For this convention, bulkDensity describes the fine-earth mass per layer volume before the explicit coarse-fragment reduction. Avoid applying that reduction twice to an already corrected density. This is one uniform layer, with no depth integration or stock-change inference.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use measured density, method-specific moisture procedures and uncertainty analysis where simple homogeneous-material assumptions are insufficient.
