Conservation Payment Opportunity Cost Gap Tool

Calculate supplied conservation payment minus opportunity cost in the same valuation basis without judging participation incentives.

Description

Measure a conservation payment's signed gap from a supplied opportunity cost.

Environmental valuation separates measured quantities, supplied unit values, accounting flows and assumed counterfactuals. A permit balance differs from a verified registry holding, and an avoided-tonne cost requires a defined baseline and cost boundary. Income-adjusted benefit transfer depends on a supplied elasticity rather than establishing transferable welfare benefits.

Measure a conservation payment's signed gap from a supplied opportunity cost.

When to use this tool

Use Conservation Payment Opportunity Cost Gap when you already have opportunityCost, conservationPayment and need to measure a conservation payment's signed gap from a supplied opportunity cost.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter opportunityCost, conservationPayment. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read signedGap. Use the output convention below.

Return conservationPayment-opportunityCost with no absolute value or nonnegative clamp.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Both values and the result may be signed. No opportunity cost, land-use decision, entitlement or appropriate compensation is determined.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use the complete emissions, cost, valuation and registry records for an actual environmental assessment. Review the relevant accounting boundary and applicable rules before combining local payment, exemption or unit-benefit terms into a policy conclusion.
