Abatement Cost Per Tonne

Divide explicit incremental cost by positive avoided emissions in tonnes, retaining negative cost savings.

Description

Calculate incremental cost per avoided tonne under supplied emissions scenarios.

Environmental valuation separates measured quantities, supplied unit values, accounting flows and assumed counterfactuals. A permit balance differs from a verified registry holding, and an avoided-tonne cost requires a defined baseline and cost boundary. Income-adjusted benefit transfer depends on a supplied elasticity rather than establishing transferable welfare benefits.

Calculate incremental cost per avoided tonne under supplied emissions scenarios.

When to use this tool

Use Abatement Cost Per Tonne when you already have incrementalCost, baselineEmissionsTonnes, projectEmissionsTonnes and need to calculate incremental cost per avoided tonne under supplied emissions scenarios.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter incrementalCost, baselineEmissionsTonnes, projectEmissionsTonnes. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read avoidedTonnes, costPerAvoidedTonne. Use the output convention below.

Require nonnegative baseline/project emissions with baseline>project; return avoided tonnes and incrementalCost/avoidedTonnes.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Cost may be signed. No baseline, causal reduction, carbon equivalence, cost boundary or cost effectiveness is established.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use the complete emissions, cost, valuation and registry records for an actual environmental assessment. Review the relevant accounting boundary and applicable rules before combining local payment, exemption or unit-benefit terms into a policy conclusion.
