Parasitoid Emergence Host Count Share Tool

Host-level emergence incidence and brood size are distinct; multiple parasitoids per host remain valid.

Description

hostEmergenceFraction = emergedHosts/exposedHosts; parasitoidsPerEmergingHost = parasitoids/emergedHosts.

Entomological counts can refer to individuals, hosts, marker grains or a known cohort. Ratios are meaningful only when numerator and denominator describe compatible observations; an absent denominator differs from an observed zero proportion.

hostEmergenceFraction = emergedHosts/exposedHosts; parasitoidsPerEmergingHost = parasitoids/emergedHosts.

When to use this tool

Use Parasitoid Emergence Host Count Share when checking a supplied count ratio or cohort balance.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter emergedHosts, exposedHosts, parasitoids. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read hostEmergenceFraction, parasitoidsPerEmergingHost. Use the output convention below.

Require whole exposedHosts >= emergedHosts >= 1 and whole parasitoids >= emergedHosts. hostEmergenceFraction = emergedHosts/exposedHosts; parasitoidsPerEmergingHost = parasitoids/emergedHosts.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Hosts with emergence and individual parasitoid counts use different denominators. Zero emergence is rejected; parasitism, survival and detection are not separately estimated.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use appropriate counting, subsampling and recovery methods for inference beyond these supplied counts.
