Insect Count Subsample Share Tool

Calculate insect count subsample share from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Loading tool…

Description

share = subsampleCount/totalCount when totalCount > 0; otherwise return share = 0 and defined = false.

Entomological counts can refer to individuals, hosts, marker grains or a known cohort. Ratios are meaningful only when numerator and denominator describe compatible observations; an absent denominator differs from an observed zero proportion.

share = subsampleCount/totalCount when totalCount > 0; otherwise return share = 0 and defined = false.

When to use this tool

Use Insect Count Subsample Share when checking a supplied count ratio or cohort balance.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter subsampleCount, totalCount. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read share, defined. Inspect defined before interpreting the associated values.

Require nonnegative whole totalCount and subsampleCount <= totalCount. share = subsampleCount/totalCount when totalCount > 0; otherwise return share = 0 and defined = false.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
subsampleCountSubsample CountRequired. Safe integer; minimum 0.
totalCountTotal CountRequired. Safe integer; minimum 0.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
shareDimensionless selected contribution divided by the stated total; not percent.Required. Finite number.
definedWhether the stated denominator has positive support; read this before interpreting a zero placeholder.Required. Boolean.

Limitations and assumptions

  • A zero total makes the proportion undefined. This count share does not estimate total population size, random-subsample inclusion probability or counting uncertainty.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use appropriate counting, subsampling and recovery methods for inference beyond these supplied counts.
