Description
Return ratio = signal/background with both values on the same signal unit and calibration basis.
Assay ratios and reference comparisons require compatible units, molecular forms and calibration. A nonzero denominator or valid logarithm domain is a numerical property, not proof of measurement validity or a clinical interpretation.
Return ratio = signal/background with both values on the same signal unit and calibration basis.
When to use this tool
Use Endocrine Signal Background Ratio when checking a supplied assay ratio, conversion or reference gap.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter signal, background. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read ratio. Use the output convention below.
Require background !== 0. Return ratio = signal/background with both values on the same signal unit and calibration basis.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| signal | Signal | Required. Finite number. |
| background | Background | Required. Finite number. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| ratio | Ratio using the stated numerator and denominator convention. | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Signed background and signal are permitted. The ratio is not a background-subtracted value, signal-to-noise estimate or assay acceptance decision.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Review assay-specific calibration, molecular-form equivalence and appropriate clinical context before interpreting a result.
