Magnetically Coupled Inductor Energy Cross Term Tool

Return only the signed mutual M*i1*i2 contribution to ideal coupled-inductor stored energy.

Loading tool…

Description

energyTerm = mutual*firstCurrent*secondCurrent, negated when aiding is false.

Magnetic coupling uses explicit winding, current and voltage references. Turns-square reflection and mutual-energy signs are ideal model conventions; they do not establish actual coupling, saturation or a safe winding connection.

energyTerm = mutual*firstCurrent*secondCurrent, negated when aiding is false.

When to use this tool

Use Magnetically Coupled Inductor Energy Cross Term when checking one supplied turns-ratio, dot-reference or mutual-coupling term.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter mutual, firstCurrent, secondCurrent, aiding. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read energyTerm. Use the output convention below.

Require nonnegative mutual inductance. energyTerm = mutual*firstCurrent*secondCurrent, negated when aiding is false.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Use henries and amperes for joules. This is only the mutual cross term, without individual self energies or a check that the coupled-inductor parameters are physically realizable.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use the full coupled circuit and component data for physical realizability, losses, transients and operating constraints.
