Electricity: Inductor Mutual Dot Sign Tool

Apply the ideal mutual-inductance dot-convention sign to one supplied current derivative and voltage-reference orientation; not a coupled-circuit solver.

Loading tool…

Description

inducedVoltage = mutualInductance*currentSlope, positive when currentEntersDot equals voltageMeasuredDotPositive and negative otherwise.

Magnetic coupling uses explicit winding, current and voltage references. Turns-square reflection and mutual-energy signs are ideal model conventions; they do not establish actual coupling, saturation or a safe winding connection.

inducedVoltage = mutualInductance*currentSlope, positive when currentEntersDot equals voltageMeasuredDotPositive and negative otherwise.

When to use this tool

Use Electricity: Inductor Mutual Dot Sign when checking one supplied turns-ratio, dot-reference or mutual-coupling term.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter mutualInductance, currentSlope, currentEntersDot, voltageMeasuredDotPositive. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read result. Expand result to inspect the returned fields.

Require nonnegative mutualInductance. inducedVoltage = mutualInductance*currentSlope, positive when currentEntersDot equals voltageMeasuredDotPositive and negative otherwise.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Use H and A/s for volts. Dot and current references are supplied; no self-induced voltage, coupling validity, saturation or safe connection is assessed.
  • Outputs are nested inside result. Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use the full coupled circuit and component data for physical realizability, losses, transients and operating constraints.
