Inductance Coupling Sign Term Tool

Form one signed ideal mutual-inductance term from supplied coupling magnitude and aiding/opposing convention.

Loading tool…

Description

signedMutualInductance = couplingMagnitude*sqrt(firstInductance)*sqrt(secondInductance), negated when aiding is false.

Magnetic coupling uses explicit winding, current and voltage references. Turns-square reflection and mutual-energy signs are ideal model conventions; they do not establish actual coupling, saturation or a safe winding connection.

signedMutualInductance = couplingMagnitude*sqrt(firstInductance)*sqrt(secondInductance), negated when aiding is false.

When to use this tool

Use Inductance Coupling Sign Term when checking one supplied turns-ratio, dot-reference or mutual-coupling term.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter couplingMagnitude, firstInductance, secondInductance, aiding. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read signedMutualInductance. Use the output convention below.

Require couplingMagnitude in [0,1] and nonnegative firstInductance and secondInductance. signedMutualInductance = couplingMagnitude*sqrt(firstInductance)*sqrt(secondInductance), negated when aiding is false.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • The sign reflects the supplied reference convention. Frequency, geometry, losses and actual coupling magnitude are not estimated.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use the full coupled circuit and component data for physical realizability, losses, transients and operating constraints.
