Geologic Core Recovery Fraction

Compare explicit recovered core length with drilled interval, retaining apparent recovery above unity for review.

Description

Calculate core recovery relative to a supplied drilled interval.

Earth-science records distinguish depth signs, vertical datums, before-present ages, calibration factors and specimen definitions. Apparent porosity can be negative for inconsistent density inputs, and core recovery may exceed the drilled interval. Local labels and supplied transformations do not establish geological interpretation, physical validity or actual observation quality.

Calculate core recovery relative to a supplied drilled interval.

When to use this tool

Use Geologic Core Recovery Fraction when you already have recoveredLength, drilledInterval and need to calculate core recovery relative to a supplied drilled interval.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter recoveredLength, drilledInterval. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read recoveryFraction, excessRecoveredLength. Use the output convention below.

Require recoveredLength>=0 and drilledInterval>0; fraction=recovered/drilled, excess=max(0,recovered-drilled).1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
recoveredLengthRecovered LengthRequired. Finite number; minimum 0.
drilledIntervalDrilled IntervalRequired. Finite number; strictly above 0.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
recoveryFractionRecovered length/drilled interval; may exceed one.Required. Finite number.
excessRecoveredLengthExcess Recovered LengthRequired. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Recovery above one is allowed and flagged through excess length. No drilling interval, expansion, overlap, depth alignment or specimen completeness is verified.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use verified survey, sample, sensor and timescale records with consistent units and reference frames. Apply the complete geological, hydrological or physical model when local density ratios, depth spans or calibration terms cannot establish the required interpretation.
