Description

Calculate a density-ratio apparent porosity term.

Earth-science records distinguish depth signs, vertical datums, before-present ages, calibration factors and specimen definitions. Apparent porosity can be negative for inconsistent density inputs, and core recovery may exceed the drilled interval. Local labels and supplied transformations do not establish geological interpretation, physical validity or actual observation quality.

Calculate a density-ratio apparent porosity term.

When to use this tool

Use Rock Sample Porosity Grainbulk Density Term when you already have dryBulkDensity, grainDensity and need to calculate a density-ratio apparent porosity term.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter dryBulkDensity, grainDensity. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read apparentPorosity. Use the output convention below.

Require dryBulkDensity>=0 and grainDensity positive/finite; return 1-dryBulkDensity/grainDensity.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
dryBulkDensityDry Bulk DensityRequired. Finite number; minimum 0.
grainDensityGrain DensityRequired. Finite number; strictly above 0.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
apparentPorosity1-dryBulkDensity/grainDensity; negative values are accepted rather than physically validated.Required. Finite number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Matching density units and compatible dry/grain bases are assumed. Bulk density greater than grain density gives negative porosity; no physical validity, accessible porosity or material safety is established.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use verified survey, sample, sensor and timescale records with consistent units and reference frames. Apply the complete geological, hydrological or physical model when local density ratios, depth spans or calibration terms cannot establish the required interpretation.
