Borehole Depth Interval Label

Label an explicit downward-positive borehole interval and its length without inferring sampled material.

Description

Label a nonnegative ordered borehole interval and return its length.

Earth-science records distinguish depth signs, vertical datums, before-present ages, calibration factors and specimen definitions. Apparent porosity can be negative for inconsistent density inputs, and core recovery may exceed the drilled interval. Local labels and supplied transformations do not establish geological interpretation, physical validity or actual observation quality.

Label a nonnegative ordered borehole interval and return its length.

When to use this tool

Use Borehole Depth Interval Label when you already have boreholeId, fromDepth, toDepth, unitText and need to label a nonnegative ordered borehole interval and return its length.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter boreholeId, fromDepth, toDepth, unitText. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read label, intervalLength. Use the output convention below.

Require boreholeId/unitText nonempty and 0<=fromDepth<=toDepth; return the interval label and to-from.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • A zero-width interval is accepted. No measured/true-vertical depth conversion, sample coverage, trajectory or geological interpretation is inferred.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use verified survey, sample, sensor and timescale records with consistent units and reference frames. Apply the complete geological, hydrological or physical model when local density ratios, depth spans or calibration terms cannot establish the required interpretation.
