Description
Compare dependency ratios under two working-age denominators.
Demographic support and equivalence ratios depend on age cutoffs, participation and supplied household or consumer weights. Weighted population quantities describe the chosen accounting basis rather than actual needs or social value.
Compare dependency ratios under two working-age denominators.
When to use this tool
Use Dependency Ratio Denominator Shift when checking a supplied demographic classification or weighting convention.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter dependentCount, oldWorkingAgeBase, newWorkingAgeBase. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read oldRatio, newRatio, ratioChange. Use the output convention below.
Compare dependency ratios under two working-age denominators. Require nonnegative whole dependentCount and positive whole bases; return dependent/base for each and new-minus-old ratioChange.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| dependentCount | Dependent Count | Required. Safe integer; minimum 0. |
| oldWorkingAgeBase | Old Working Age Base | Required. Safe integer; minimum 1. |
| newWorkingAgeBase | New Working Age Base | Required. Safe integer; minimum 1. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| oldRatio | Old Ratio | Required. Finite number. |
| newRatio | New Ratio | Required. Finite number. |
| ratioChange | Ratio Change | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- The dependent count is held fixed; classifications and actual worker-support relationships are not verified.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use documented population definitions and appropriate empirical weights for complete demographic or household analysis.
