Description
Label an annotation's supplied half-open offset span and length.
Critical annotations distinguish source voices, editorial insertions, omission markers, edition locators and caller-assigned interpretations. Case preservation and half-open text offsets describe representation rather than meaning. A bracketed token or source-role label does not verify faithful quotation, authority, an argument or its historical context.
Label an annotation's supplied half-open offset span and length.
When to use this tool
Use Critical Reading Annotation Span Label when you already have documentId, startOffset, endOffsetExclusive, annotationCode and need to label an annotation's supplied half-open offset span and length.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter documentId, startOffset, endOffsetExclusive, annotationCode. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read label, length. Use the output convention below.
Require documentId/annotationCode nonempty and safe whole 0<=startOffset<=endOffsetExclusive; label [start, end), length=end-start.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| documentId | Document Id | Required. Text; minimum UTF-16 length 1; maximum UTF-16 length 8192. |
| startOffset | Nonnegative safe index in the caller-defined unit; source text length is not inspected. | Required. Safe integer; minimum 0. |
| endOffsetExclusive | Safe index at least start; length=end-start and the end is excluded. | Required. Safe integer. |
| annotationCode | Annotation Code | Required. Text; minimum UTF-16 length 1; maximum UTF-16 length 8192. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| label | Label | Required. Text; maximum UTF-16 length 8192. |
| length | Length | Required. Safe integer. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Offsets use the caller's chosen index unit, not an inferred code-point or UTF-16 basis. No source length, actual text span, annotation or interpretation is validated.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Read the original passage and relevant edition with the stated interpretive and editorial conventions. Verify source context and attribution before reuse; local span labels and interpretation-objection pair keys organize records without evaluating the argument or granting quotation rights.
