Description
Check a supplied annotation offset against a half-open scope interval.
Critical annotations distinguish source voices, editorial insertions, omission markers, edition locators and caller-assigned interpretations. Case preservation and half-open text offsets describe representation rather than meaning. A bracketed token or source-role label does not verify faithful quotation, authority, an argument or its historical context.
Check a supplied annotation offset against a half-open scope interval.
When to use this tool
Use Argument Annotation Scope Boundary when you already have annotationOffset, scopeStart, scopeEnd and need to check a supplied annotation offset against a half-open scope interval.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter annotationOffset, scopeStart, scopeEnd. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read withinScope. Inspect withinScope before interpreting the associated values.
Require safe whole annotationOffset/scopeStart>=0 and scopeEnd>=scopeStart; return start<=offset && offset<end.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| annotationOffset | Annotation Offset | Required. Safe integer; minimum 0. |
| scopeStart | Scope Start | Required. Safe integer; minimum 0. |
| scopeEnd | Scope End | Required. Safe integer. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| withinScope | start<=offset<end; an empty scope includes nothing. | Required. Boolean. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- An empty interval contains no offset and the end is excluded. No document length, text span, annotation validity or substantive argument scope is inferred.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Read the original passage and relevant edition with the stated interpretive and editorial conventions. Verify source context and attribution before reuse; local span labels and interpretation-objection pair keys organize records without evaluating the argument or granting quotation rights.
