Distillation Feed Quality Line Slope Tool

McCabe-Thiele q-line y=q*x/(q-1)-zF/(q-1); saturated liquid q=1 is vertical and has no finite slope.

Description

Return the distillation feed-quality line slope and intercept.

A process stream can be described on mass, mole, phase or solvent bases, which are not interchangeable. Lever rules, partition factors and operating-line terms assume compatible composition definitions and an appropriate physical model; a local balance does not determine equilibrium properties or a complete separation design.

Return the distillation feed-quality line slope and intercept.

When to use this tool

Use Distillation Feed Quality Line Slope when checking the stated stream composition, phase or separation-model term.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter feedQuality, feedComposition. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read slope, intercept. Use the output convention below.

Return the distillation feed-quality line slope and intercept. Require feedQuality != 1 and feedComposition in [0,1]; slope = q/(q-1), intercept = -composition/(q-1).1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Feed quality here is q, not vapor fraction restricted to [0,1]; saturated-liquid vertical q=1 is rejected rather than represented.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use verified equilibrium and material-property data on consistent bases and solve the complete process model for actual separation or equipment decisions.
