Root Shoot Water Basis Factor Tool

Convert wet masses to dry masses from supplied wet-basis water fractions before taking their ratio.

Description

Convert root/shoot wet masses to a dry-mass ratio.

Plant observations and seed or growth summaries depend on sampling area, observation time, material basis and inclusion policy. A local count or ratio can be consistent with the supplied records without estimating a complete population, establishing germination quality or identifying a growth mechanism.

Convert root/shoot wet masses to a dry-mass ratio.

When to use this tool

Use Root Shoot Water Basis Factor when checking the stated botanical observation, seed, growth or coverage convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter rootWet, shootWet, rootWaterFraction, shootWaterFraction. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read rootDry, shootDry, dryRatio. Use the output convention below.

Convert root/shoot wet masses to a dry-mass ratio. Require rootWet >= 0, shootWet > 0, root water fraction in [0,1] and shoot water fraction in [0,1); multiply by one minus water fraction and divide rootDry/shootDry.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Water fractions use wet-mass basis; actual drying, tissue condition and physiological interpretation are not verified.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use verified observations and an appropriate sampling, growth or material-balance model; assess uncertainty and biological meaning separately.
