Molar Growth Atp Yield

Compare observed ATP and biomass yields on a molar substrate basis; no metabolic stoichiometry is embedded.

Description

Yield can be expressed per mole of substrate or per mole of ATP.

Yield can be expressed per mole of substrate or per mole of ATP. These denominators distinguish an observed energetic yield from a mass-only biomass/substrate comparison.1

Compare observed ATP and biomass yields on a molar substrate basis; no metabolic stoichiometry is embedded.

When to use Molar Growth Atp Yield

Use this tool to compare observed ATP and biomass yields on a molar substrate basis; no metabolic stoichiometry is embedded.

Prepare the sample, count, growth or assay measurements requested by this tool. Confirm units, sampling periods and reporting bases; supply independently established comparison criteria where requested.

How to use Molar Growth Atp Yield and understand its results

  1. Prepare the sample, count, growth or assay measurements requested by this tool. Confirm units, sampling periods and reporting bases; supply independently established comparison criteria where requested.
  2. Enter atpMolesProduced, substrateMolesConsumed, biomassGramsProduced using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read atpMolesPerSubstrateMole, biomassGramsPerSubstrateMole, biomassGramsPerAtpMole. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
atpMolesProducedAtp moles producednumberRequired
substrateMolesConsumedSubstrate moles consumednumberRequired
biomassGramsProducedBiomass grams producednumber; minimum: 0Required

Enter positive ATP moles and consumed substrate moles plus nonnegative produced biomass grams. The tool returns ATP moles per substrate mole, biomass grams per substrate mole and biomass grams per ATP mole. Zero produced biomass gives zero for both biomass yields.

ATP/substrate=ATPmol/substrateMol; biomass/ATP=biomassGrams/ATPmol

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

It does not embed pathway stoichiometry or infer ATP production from substrate. Inputs must describe the same interval and basis; maintenance, unmeasured products and assay uncertainty are not corrected.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Maintenance Substrate Consumption: Compute substrate uptake from growth yield plus maintenance and scale it by biomass concentration. For a complementary task, use Batch Biomass Productivity: Compute net biomass production and volumetric productivity in a constant-volume batch culture.
