Maintenance Substrate Consumption
Compute substrate uptake from growth yield plus maintenance and scale it by biomass concentration.
Description
Substrate consumption can include both biomass formation and maintenance.
Substrate consumption can include both biomass formation and maintenance. A specific consumption rate becomes a volumetric demand only after multiplying by the biomass concentration.1
Compute substrate uptake from growth yield plus maintenance and scale it by biomass concentration.
When to use Maintenance Substrate Consumption
Use this tool to compute substrate uptake from growth yield plus maintenance and scale it by biomass concentration.
Prepare the sample, count, growth or assay measurements requested by this tool. Confirm units, sampling periods and reporting bases; supply independently established comparison criteria where requested.
How to use Maintenance Substrate Consumption and understand its results
- Prepare the sample, count, growth or assay measurements requested by this tool. Confirm units, sampling periods and reporting bases; supply independently established comparison criteria where requested.
- Enter specificGrowthRatePerHour, biomassYieldGramsPerGram, maintenanceGramsPerGramHour, biomassGramsPerLiter using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read specificConsumptionGramsPerGramHour, volumetricConsumptionGramsPerLiterHour. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| specificGrowthRatePerHour | Specific growth rate per hour | number; minimum: 0 | Required |
| biomassYieldGramsPerGram | Biomass yield grams per gram | number | Required |
| maintenanceGramsPerGramHour | Maintenance grams per gram hour | number; minimum: 0 | Required |
| biomassGramsPerLiter | Biomass grams per liter | number; minimum: 0 | Required |
Enter nonnegative growth per hour, maintenance g/g/hour and biomass g/L, with positive biomass yield in g/g. Return substrate g per biomass g per hour and substrate g/L/hour. Zero growth can still leave a maintenance demand; zero biomass makes volumetric demand zero.
specificUptake=μ/biomassYield+maintenance; volumeUptake=specificUptake × biomassConcentration Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| specificConsumptionGramsPerGramHour | Specific consumption grams per gram hour | number |
| volumetricConsumptionGramsPerLiterHour | Volumetric consumption grams per liter hour | number |

} Limitations and assumptions
Yield and maintenance are supplied constants. Changing biomass, feed limits, inhibition and unmeasured products are not integrated over time, so this is an instantaneous model.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Molar Growth Atp Yield: Compare observed ATP and biomass yields on a molar substrate basis; no metabolic stoichiometry is embedded. For a complementary task, use Chemostat Residual Substrate: Solve the non-washout Monod chemostat branch and check whether the feed can sustain its residual substrate concentration.
