Batch Biomass Productivity
Compute net biomass production and volumetric productivity in a constant-volume batch culture.
Description
Batch volumetric productivity compares net biomass concentration gain with elapsed time.
Batch volumetric productivity compares net biomass concentration gain with elapsed time. Converting that concentration gain to total produced mass additionally requires the culture volume.1
Compute net biomass production and volumetric productivity in a constant-volume batch culture.
When to use Batch Biomass Productivity
Use this tool to compute net biomass production and volumetric productivity in a constant-volume batch culture.
Prepare the sample, count, growth or assay measurements requested by this tool. Confirm units, sampling periods and reporting bases; supply independently established comparison criteria where requested.
How to use Batch Biomass Productivity and understand its results
- Prepare the sample, count, growth or assay measurements requested by this tool. Confirm units, sampling periods and reporting bases; supply independently established comparison criteria where requested.
- Enter initialBiomassGramsPerLiter, finalBiomassGramsPerLiter, cultureVolumeLiters, elapsedHours using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read netBiomassGrams, volumetricProductivityGramsPerLiterHour. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| initialBiomassGramsPerLiter | Initial biomass grams per liter | number; minimum: 0 | Required |
| finalBiomassGramsPerLiter | Final biomass grams per liter | number; minimum: 0 | Required |
| cultureVolumeLiters | Culture volume liters | number | Required |
| elapsedHours | Elapsed hours | number | Required |
Enter nonnegative initial/final biomass g/L, positive volume L and positive elapsed hours. Final concentration must not be below initial. Return net grams and average g/L/hour. Equal concentrations give zero production and productivity.
netMass=(final−initial) × volume; productivity=(final−initial)/hours Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| netBiomassGrams | Net biomass grams | number |
| volumetricProductivityGramsPerLiterHour | Volumetric productivity grams per liter hour | number |

} Limitations and assumptions
Culture volume is assumed constant. Losses, sampling, feeding, changing volume and growth-rate dynamics are not resolved; the estimate concerns only the supplied endpoints.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Maintenance Substrate Consumption: Compute substrate uptake from growth yield plus maintenance and scale it by biomass concentration. For a complementary task, use Molar Growth Atp Yield: Compare observed ATP and biomass yields on a molar substrate basis; no metabolic stoichiometry is embedded.
