Chemostat Residual Substrate
Solve the non-washout Monod chemostat branch and check whether the feed can sustain its residual substrate concentration.
Description
The positive-biomass Monod chemostat branch has a residual substrate concentration set by dilution rate.
The positive-biomass Monod chemostat branch has a residual substrate concentration set by dilution rate. Even with D below μmax, the feed must exceed that residual to sustain a positive biomass state.1
Solve the non-washout Monod chemostat branch and check whether the feed can sustain its residual substrate concentration.
When to use Chemostat Residual Substrate
Use this tool to solve the non-washout Monod chemostat branch and check whether the feed can sustain its residual substrate concentration.
Prepare the sample, count, growth or assay measurements requested by this tool. Confirm units, sampling periods and reporting bases; supply independently established comparison criteria where requested.
How to use Chemostat Residual Substrate and understand its results
- Prepare the sample, count, growth or assay measurements requested by this tool. Confirm units, sampling periods and reporting bases; supply independently established comparison criteria where requested.
- Enter dilutionRatePerHour, maximumGrowthRatePerHour, halfSaturationGramsPerLiter, feedSubstrateGramsPerLiter using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read residualSubstrateGramsPerLiter, positiveBiomassSteadyStateFeasible. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| dilutionRatePerHour | Dilution rate per hour | number | Required |
| maximumGrowthRatePerHour | Maximum growth rate per hour | number | Required |
| halfSaturationGramsPerLiter | Half saturation grams per liter | number | Required |
| feedSubstrateGramsPerLiter | Feed substrate grams per liter | number; minimum: 0 | Required |
Enter positive D and μmax per hour with D<μmax, positive Ks and nonnegative feed substrate in g/L. Return residual g/L and a strict feed-feasibility flag. Equality to the feed is not a positive-biomass state; D at/above μmax is an input error.
residualS = D Ks/(μmax−D); feasible if residualS<feedS Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| residualSubstrateGramsPerLiter | Residual substrate grams per liter | number |
| positiveBiomassSteadyStateFeasible | Positive biomass steady state feasible | boolean |

} Limitations and assumptions
This solves an ideal steady-state branch without maintenance, cell retention, inhibition or transients. A computed residual does not by itself prove that the actual culture reaches that state.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Feed Limited Chemostat Washout: Screen the feed-limited Monod chemostat washout boundary from flow, volume, and feed substrate; equality is the zero-biomass boundary. For a complementary task, use Maintenance Substrate Consumption: Compute substrate uptake from growth yield plus maintenance and scale it by biomass concentration.
