Tracer Background Unit Basis Tool

Calculate tracer background unit basis from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Description

Return sample and background on a shared supplied basis.

Atmospheric analytical quantities require explicit sample/background, mole, charge, reference-pressure and reporting bases. A ratio or balance can be consistent numerically without establishing actual composition, sample representativeness, source identity or a health/regulatory interpretation.

Return sample and background on a shared supplied basis.

When to use this tool

Use Tracer Background Unit Basis when checking the stated atmospheric chemical measurement, composition or amount convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter observed, observedToBase, background, backgroundToBase. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read observedBase, backgroundBase, netBase. Use the output convention below.

Return sample and background on a shared supplied basis. Require positive observed/background conversion factors; observedBase = observed*factor, backgroundBase = background*factor, netBase subtracts them.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Signed values are retained; matching units, sample identity and analytical validity are not verified.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use calibrated analytical data, compatible units and complete sampling/speciation information; consult appropriate environmental professionals for exposure or regulatory decisions.
