Description

Return plate and supplied suffix-order indexes.

Art catalogs and inscriptions encode editions, states, suffixes and transcribed lines through explicit notation. Literal tokens and line positions can be reconciled without authenticating an impression, assigning authorship or resolving differences between cataloging authorities. The supplied prefix, separator and numbering convention are part of the input.

Return plate and supplied suffix-order indexes.

When to use this tool

Use Print Catalogue Plate Suffix Order when checking the stated inscription, edition or catalog-token convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter plate, suffix, orderedSuffixes. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read plate, suffixIndex. Use the output convention below.

Return plate and supplied suffix-order indexes. Require nonnegative whole plate, unique orderedSuffixes and suffix membership; suffixIndex is its zero-based list position.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • The suffix ordering is caller-defined; no historical plate sequence, catalogue identity or scholarly priority is inferred.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Consult the original inscription and authoritative catalog for attribution, edition identity and the notation used by the relevant collection.
