Description
Format a numbered/proof edition label.
Art catalogs and inscriptions encode editions, states, suffixes and transcribed lines through explicit notation. Literal tokens and line positions can be reconciled without authenticating an impression, assigning authorship or resolving differences between cataloging authorities. The supplied prefix, separator and numbering convention are part of the input.
Format a numbered/proof edition label.
When to use this tool
Use Art History: Print Edition Proof Number Label when checking the stated inscription, edition or catalog-token convention.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter editionNumber, editionSize, proofKind. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read result. Expand result to inspect the returned fields.
Format a numbered/proof edition label. Require editionSize 1..1e6, editionNumber within it and proofKind numbered/AP/PP; return number/size with the proof prefix when selected.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| editionNumber | Edition Number | Required. Safe integer. Calculation range: 1 through editionSize, inclusive. |
| editionSize | Edition Size | Required. Safe integer. Calculation range: 1 through 1000000, inclusive. |
| proofKind | Restricted AP, PP or numbered token convention; editionNumber/editionSize are still required inputs for proof tags. | Required. Text; one of "numbered", "AP", "PP". Implementation limit: 8192 Unicode code points and 16384 UTF-16 code units. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| result | Object containing the returned operation-specific members listed below. | Required. Object. |
| result.label | Label | Calculated result member: string. |
{
"input": {
"editionNumber": 2,
"editionSize": 50,
"proofKind": "AP"
},
"output": {
"result": {
"label": "AP 2/50"
}
}
} Limitations and assumptions
- Proof counters are supplied even for AP/PP; no edition provenance, artist authorization or actual print identity is verified.
- Outputs are nested inside result. Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
