Description

Split a catalogue identifier at its last delimiter.

Art catalogs and inscriptions encode editions, states, suffixes and transcribed lines through explicit notation. Literal tokens and line positions can be reconciled without authenticating an impression, assigning authorship or resolving differences between cataloging authorities. The supplied prefix, separator and numbering convention are part of the input.

Split a catalogue identifier at its last delimiter.

When to use this tool

Use Catalogue Item Edition Suffix when checking the stated inscription, edition or catalog-token convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter identifier, delimiter. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read base, edition, hasEdition. Inspect hasEdition before interpreting the associated values.

Split a catalogue identifier at its last delimiter. Require nonempty delimiter; return base and edition when present, otherwise retain full base and empty edition, hasEdition reports delimiter presence.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Empty split components are accepted; edition presence does not establish a valid or current catalogue record.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Consult the original inscription and authoritative catalog for attribution, edition identity and the notation used by the relevant collection.
