Description
Parse a restricted edition label.
Art catalogs and inscriptions encode editions, states, suffixes and transcribed lines through explicit notation. Literal tokens and line positions can be reconciled without authenticating an impression, assigning authorship or resolving differences between cataloging authorities. The supplied prefix, separator and numbering convention are part of the input.
Parse a restricted edition label.
When to use this tool
Use Edition Proof Numbered Unnumbered Tag when checking the stated inscription, edition or catalog-token convention.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter label. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read kind, number, total. Use the output convention below.
Parse a restricted edition label. AP and HC return that kind with zero numeric placeholders; otherwise require positive number/total decimal text with number <= total, returning kind numbered.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |

{
"input": {
"label": "3/50"
},
"output": {
"kind": "numbered",
"number": 3,
"total": 50
}
} Limitations and assumptions
- No extra whitespace, proof numbering or other labels are accepted; this is syntax parsing rather than edition authentication.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Consult the original inscription and authoritative catalog for attribution, edition identity and the notation used by the relevant collection.
