Description
Compensate nominal clay dimensions for two supplied retentions.
Studio material calculations distinguish gross stock, usable material, finished area and losses. A loss fraction can refer to material removed from the starting quantity or an extra allowance added to a requirement; these conventions produce different formulas and must remain explicit.
Compensate nominal clay dimensions for two supplied retentions.
When to use this tool
Use Clay Class Shrinkage Mark Compensation when checking the stated studio material, shrinkage or usable-area convention.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter targetLength, wetToDryRetention, dryToFiredRetention. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read wetLength, dryLength, totalRetention. Use the output convention below.
Compensate nominal clay dimensions for two supplied retentions. Require targetLength >= 0 and each retention in (0,1]; totalRetention is their product, dryLength = target/dryToFired, wetLength = target/totalRetention.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| targetLength | Target Length | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| wetToDryRetention | Retained length fraction, not shrinkage fraction. | Required. Finite number; maximum 1; strictly above 0. |
| dryToFiredRetention | Retained length fraction from dry to fired state. | Required. Finite number; maximum 1; strictly above 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| wetLength | Wet Length | Required. Finite number. |
| dryLength | Dry Length | Required. Finite number. |
| totalRetention | Total Retention | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Retentions are linear ratios, not shrinkage percentages; actual clay, firing behavior and suitable or safe processing are not determined.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use measured material behavior, actual offcuts and process-specific trials to plan fabrication or firing; review classroom conditions with qualified staff.
