Classroom Collage Offcut Area Credit Tool

Usable area accounting, excluding geometric nesting of irregular offcuts.

Description

Return usable offcut-area credit, new-area need and surplus.

Studio material calculations distinguish gross stock, usable material, finished area and losses. A loss fraction can refer to material removed from the starting quantity or an extra allowance added to a requirement; these conventions produce different formulas and must remain explicit.

Return usable offcut-area credit, new-area need and surplus.

When to use this tool

Use Classroom Collage Offcut Area Credit when checking the stated studio material, shrinkage or usable-area convention.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter requiredArea, offcutAreas, usableFractions. Follow any array-alignment requirements below. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read usableOffcutArea, newAreaNeeded, surplus. Use the output convention below.

Return usable offcut-area credit, new-area need and surplus. Require aligned nonnegative areas, usable fractions in [0,1] and requiredArea >= 0; credit is dot product, need/surplus are opposite positive parts of required-credit.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Area credit does not solve a cutting/packing problem or establish usable offcut shapes and material compatibility.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use measured material behavior, actual offcuts and process-specific trials to plan fabrication or firing; review classroom conditions with qualified staff.
