Description
Return a roof valley's plan-diagonal length.
Architectural openings and clearances depend on measured boundaries, projection axes and a caller-supplied comparison criterion. A positive geometric margin is distinct from demonstrating code compliance, safe access or a complete door-swing envelope. Plan lengths and projected dimensions must not be mistaken for full spatial measurements.
Return a roof valley's plan-diagonal length.
When to use this tool
Use Roof Valley Plan Diagonal Factor when checking the stated opening, projection or clearance geometry.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter firstRun, secondRun. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read planLength. Use the output convention below.
Return a roof valley's plan-diagonal length. Require nonnegative orthogonal runs; planLength = hypot(firstRun,secondRun).1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| firstRun | First Run | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| secondRun | Second Run | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| planLength | Horizontal-plan hypotenuse from perpendicular runs; no roof slope included. | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- This is horizontal plan length, not sloping valley length, drainage design or structural capacity.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use complete measured plans and a qualified architectural/engineering assessment with the applicable requirements for real construction or safety decisions.
