Facade Joint Open Width Thermal Delta

Subtract an explicitly supplied signed thermal closing displacement from joint width without estimating expansion or code compliance.

Description

Calculate remaining supplied joint width after a closing expansion.

Architectural scalar geometry depends on datums, finish build-ups, endpoint conventions and supplied corrections. A nominal lintel seat differs from verified bearing capacity, and internal masonry joints differ from a module repeated with extra end joints. Negative clearances can reveal discrepancies without assessing structural or legal suitability.

Calculate remaining supplied joint width after a closing expansion.

When to use this tool

Use Facade Joint Open Width Thermal Delta when you already have initialJointWidth, suppliedClosingExpansion and need to calculate remaining supplied joint width after a closing expansion.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter initialJointWidth, suppliedClosingExpansion. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read remainingOpenWidth, closedOrOverlapped. Inspect closedOrOverlapped before interpreting the associated values.

Require initialJointWidth>=0; return initial-suppliedClosingExpansion and closedOrOverlapped=expansion>=initial.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
initialJointWidthInitial Joint WidthRequired. Finite number; minimum 0.
suppliedClosingExpansionSupplied Closing ExpansionRequired. Finite number.
Output fieldInterpretationReturned shape
remainingOpenWidthRemaining Open WidthRequired. Finite number.
closedOrOverlappedTrue for suppliedClosingExpansion>=initialJointWidth, including equality.Required. Boolean.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Expansion is already supplied and can be negative; equality flags closed. No temperature response, movement model, sealant capacity or safe joint design is determined.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use controlled drawings, site measurements and complete engineering and code assessment. Check geometry, tolerances, loads and applicable requirements before interpreting local dimensions as a valid or safe design.
