Architecture: Door Leaf Clearance Hinge Offset Tool

Project a zero-thickness door leaf outer edge about an explicitly offset hinge axis in plan; not a clearance, accessibility or building-code certification.

Description

Return two door outer-edge projections about an offset hinge.

Architectural openings and clearances depend on measured boundaries, projection axes and a caller-supplied comparison criterion. A positive geometric margin is distinct from demonstrating code compliance, safe access or a complete door-swing envelope. Plan lengths and projected dimensions must not be mistaken for full spatial measurements.

Return two door outer-edge projections about an offset hinge.

When to use this tool

Use Architecture: Door Leaf Clearance Hinge Offset when checking the stated opening, projection or clearance geometry.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter leafWidth, hingeAxisOffset, openingDegrees. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read result. Expand result to inspect the returned fields.

Return two door outer-edge projections about an offset hinge. Require leafWidth > 0, hingeAxisOffset within leaf and openingDegrees in [0,180]; normal = (width-offset)*sin(angle), along = offset+(width-offset)*cos(angle).1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
leafWidthLeaf WidthRequired. Finite number.
hingeAxisOffsetHinge-axis distance from the hinge-side leaf edge, constrained within leafWidth.Required. Finite number.

result.outerEdgeNormalProjectionPerpendicular projection of the outer leaf edge about the supplied hinge axis, not actual clear passage.Calculated result member: number.

Limitations and assumptions

  • This describes one supplied planar point, not clear opening, collision detection, accessible width or safe door operation.
  • Outputs are nested inside result. Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use complete measured plans and a qualified architectural/engineering assessment with the applicable requirements for real construction or safety decisions.
