Incubation Degree-Days

Integrate positive temperature above a supplied incubation base exactly across piecewise-linear timestamped temperatures; distinct from daily high/low crop degree-day approximations.

Description

Incubation degree-days integrate temperature above a chosen biological base.

Incubation degree-days integrate temperature above a chosen biological base. When a linearly interpolated interval crosses the base, only its warm portion contributes.1

Integrate positive temperature above a supplied incubation base exactly across piecewise-linear timestamped temperatures; distinct from daily high/low crop degree-day approximations.

When to use Incubation Degree-Days

Use this tool to integrate positive temperature above a supplied incubation base exactly across piecewise-linear timestamped temperatures; distinct from daily high/low crop degree-day approximations.

Prepare the cohort, water, feed or equipment measurements for one consistent operating period. Confirm nitrogen reporting bases, dry/wet masses, flow units and supplied design assumptions.

How to use Incubation Degree-Days and understand its results

  1. Prepare the cohort, water, feed or equipment measurements for one consistent operating period. Confirm nitrogen reporting bases, dry/wet masses, flow units and supplied design assumptions.
  2. Enter timesDays, temperaturesC, baseTemperatureC, targetDegreeDays using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read accumulatedDegreeDays, remainingDegreeDays, targetMet. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

targetDegreeDaysTarget degree daysnumberRequired

Provide at least two strictly increasing day coordinates, aligned temperatures and a nonnegative target. The tool sums trapezoids for intervals wholly above base, zero below base and triangular warm portions for crossing intervals. It returns accumulated and remaining degree-days with an inclusive target-met flag.

degreeDays=∫max(temperature−base,0) dt; remaining=max(0,target−degreeDays)

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

The base and target are caller assumptions. This integrates the supplied history without predicting future temperatures or guaranteeing hatching or developmental readiness.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Weaning Time: Project remaining thermal development at a constant caller forecast and a minimum age; modeled timing does not establish feeding readiness or species-specific weaning advice. For a complementary task, use Egg Production Estimate: Estimate cohort-specific gross and viable eggs with heterogeneous spawning/fecundity inputs; distinct from inverse broodstock planning or hatch-rate ratios.
