Weaning Time

Project remaining thermal development at a constant caller forecast and a minimum age; modeled timing does not establish feeding readiness or species-specific weaning advice.

Description

Weaning plans can combine accumulated thermal exposure with a minimum age.

Weaning plans can combine accumulated thermal exposure with a minimum age. Degree-days count temperature above an explicit base; the forecast here assumes one constant future temperature.1

Project remaining thermal development at a constant caller forecast and a minimum age; modeled timing does not establish feeding readiness or species-specific weaning advice.

When to use Weaning Time

Use this tool to project remaining thermal development at a constant caller forecast and a minimum age; modeled timing does not establish feeding readiness or species-specific weaning advice.

Prepare the cohort, water, feed or equipment measurements for one consistent operating period. Confirm nitrogen reporting bases, dry/wet masses, flow units and supplied design assumptions.

How to use Weaning Time and understand its results

  1. Prepare the cohort, water, feed or equipment measurements for one consistent operating period. Confirm nitrogen reporting bases, dry/wet masses, flow units and supplied design assumptions.
  2. Enter accumulatedDegreeDays, targetWeaningDegreeDays, forecastTemperatureC, baseTemperatureC, minimumAgeDays, currentAgeDays using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read remainingThermalDays, earliestModelWeaningAgeDays. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
Input fieldMeaningValue type; see rules belowRequirement
accumulatedDegreeDaysAccumulated degree daysnumberRequired
targetWeaningDegreeDaysTarget weaning degree daysnumberRequired
forecastTemperatureCForecast temperature cnumberRequired
baseTemperatureCBase temperature cnumberRequired
minimumAgeDaysMinimum age daysnumberRequired
currentAgeDaysCurrent age daysnumberRequired

Enter nonnegative accumulated/target degree-days and ages. A positive forecast temperature excess is required only while thermal exposure remains. The tool calculates remaining degree-days internally and returns thermal days and the later of minimum age or projected thermal completion. An already reached target needs zero additional thermal days.

remaining=max(0,target−accumulated); days=remaining/(forecast−base); earliestAge=max(minimumAge,currentAge+days)

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Species readiness, feeding acceptance and forecast variation are not inferred. A cold forecast with an unmet target is an input error, not a finite completion estimate.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Incubation Degree-Days: Integrate positive temperature above a supplied incubation base exactly across piecewise-linear timestamped temperatures; distinct from daily high/low crop degree-day approximations. For a complementary task, use Fry Stocking: Invert serial expected survival to a rounded initial fry count; an expectation-based plan, not a probability guarantee or density recommendation.
