Egg Production Estimate

Estimate cohort-specific gross and viable eggs with heterogeneous spawning/fecundity inputs; distinct from inverse broodstock planning or hatch-rate ratios.

Description

Expected egg yield can differ across broodstock cohorts.

Expected egg yield can differ across broodstock cohorts. Participation and viability fractions turn maximum egg counts into fractional expected quantities.1

Estimate cohort-specific gross and viable eggs with heterogeneous spawning/fecundity inputs; distinct from inverse broodstock planning or hatch-rate ratios.

When to use Egg Production Estimate

Use this tool to estimate cohort-specific gross and viable eggs with heterogeneous spawning/fecundity inputs; distinct from inverse broodstock planning or hatch-rate ratios.

Prepare the cohort, water, feed or equipment measurements for one consistent operating period. Confirm nitrogen reporting bases, dry/wet masses, flow units and supplied design assumptions.

How to use Egg Production Estimate and understand its results

  1. Prepare the cohort, water, feed or equipment measurements for one consistent operating period. Confirm nitrogen reporting bases, dry/wet masses, flow units and supplied design assumptions.
  2. Enter femaleCountsByCohort, eggsPerSpawningFemale, spawningFractions, viableEggFractions using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read expectedGrossEggsByCohort, expectedViableEggsByCohort, totalExpectedViableEggs. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

femaleCountsByCohortFemale counts by cohortlist of numberRequired
eggsPerSpawningFemaleEggs per spawning femalelist of numberRequired
spawningFractionsSpawning fractionslist of numberRequired
viableEggFractionsViable egg fractionslist of numberRequired

Enter aligned nonempty cohort lists of nonnegative integer female counts and eggs per female with spawning and viability fractions in 0–1. The tool returns per-cohort gross and viable expectations plus total viable eggs. Fractional expected eggs are retained.

Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths.

grossEggs_i=females_i×eggsPerFemale_i×spawningFraction_i; viableEggs_i=grossEggs_i×viability_i

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

This does not model spawning correlations or guarantee viable offspring. Egg fecundity and viability must be applicable to each cohort and time window.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Broodstock Requirement: Plan broodstock counts from supplied fecundity, spawning participation and fry survival; expected productivity is not genetic, welfare or spawn-success certification. For a complementary task, use Incubation Degree-Days: Integrate positive temperature above a supplied incubation base exactly across piecewise-linear timestamped temperatures; distinct from daily high/low crop degree-day approximations.
