Broodstock Requirement

Plan broodstock counts from supplied fecundity, spawning participation and fry survival; expected productivity is not genetic, welfare or spawn-success certification.

Description

Broodstock planning works backward from an expected fry target through fecundity, spawning participation and egg-to-fry survival.

Broodstock planning works backward from an expected fry target through fecundity, spawning participation and egg-to-fry survival. Integer rounding is applied to females and then to the requested male ratio.1

Plan broodstock counts from supplied fecundity, spawning participation and fry survival; expected productivity is not genetic, welfare or spawn-success certification.

When to use Broodstock Requirement

Use this tool to plan broodstock counts from supplied fecundity, spawning participation and fry survival; expected productivity is not genetic, welfare or spawn-success certification.

Prepare the cohort, water, feed or equipment measurements for one consistent operating period. Confirm nitrogen reporting bases, dry/wet masses, flow units and supplied design assumptions.

How to use Broodstock Requirement and understand its results

  1. Prepare the cohort, water, feed or equipment measurements for one consistent operating period. Confirm nitrogen reporting bases, dry/wet masses, flow units and supplied design assumptions.
  2. Enter targetViableFryCount, eggsPerSpawningFemale, spawningFemaleFraction, eggToFrySurvival, malesPerFemale using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read requiredFemaleCount, requiredMaleCount, totalBroodstockCount. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

targetViableFryCountTarget viable fry countintegerRequired
eggsPerSpawningFemaleEggs per spawning femaleintegerRequired
spawningFemaleFractionSpawning female fractionnumberRequired
eggToFrySurvivalEgg to fry survivalnumberRequired
malesPerFemaleMales per femalenumberRequired

Enter a nonnegative integer fry target, positive integer fecundity, spawning/survival fractions greater than zero through one and nonnegative male-to-female ratio. Return safe integer female, male and total counts. A zero target gives zero animals.

females=ceil(targetFry/(eggsPerFemale×spawningFraction×survival)); males=ceil(females×maleToFemaleRatio)

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

The result is an expectation-based count, not a spawning guarantee. Genetic diversity, reproductive variability and husbandry capacity are not evaluated.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Egg Production Estimate: Estimate cohort-specific gross and viable eggs with heterogeneous spawning/fecundity inputs; distinct from inverse broodstock planning or hatch-rate ratios. For a complementary task, use Fry Stocking: Invert serial expected survival to a rounded initial fry count; an expectation-based plan, not a probability guarantee or density recommendation.
