Description
Return retained litter mass and divide by treeArea or fieldArea according to reportTreeArea.
Tree and crop material budgets distinguish wet mass, dry biomass, nutrient mass and carbon mass. A belowground-to-aboveground ratio differs from a total biomass multiplier, while returned nutrient differs from plant-available nutrient. Material accounting requires an explicit mass and reporting-area basis.
Return retained litter mass and divide by treeArea or fieldArea according to reportTreeArea.
When to use this tool
Use Tree Crop Litter Return Basis when checking the stated woody material, litter, nutrient or carbon basis.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter treeLitter, cropLitter, removedMass, fieldArea, treeArea, reportTreeArea. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read returnedMass, returnPerArea. Use the output convention below.
Require nonnegative tree/crop litter and removed mass no larger than their sum, with 0<treeArea<=fieldArea. Return retained litter mass and divide by treeArea or fieldArea according to reportTreeArea.1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| treeLitter | Tree Litter | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| cropLitter | Crop Litter | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| removedMass | Removed Mass | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| fieldArea | Field Area | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| treeArea | Tree Area | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| reportTreeArea | True reports all returned litter per tree area; false uses full field area. | Required. Boolean. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| returnedMass | Returned Mass | Required. Finite number. |
| returnPerArea | Return Per Area | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- All litter quantities use one mass basis; the reporting denominator does not attribute litter to its biological source.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use verified biomass and composition measurements and a complete suitable nutrient/carbon model for stocks, sequestration or agronomic management decisions.
