Description
Return height/tan(altitude) and max(0,alleyWidth-shadowLength).
Agroforestry geometry separates row widths, root-zone intervals, canopy projections and repeated-strip area bases. Optical shade, optical porosity and a clear machinery corridor are different quantities. Ideal dimensions and supplied overlaps can support bookkeeping without establishing light conditions, aerodynamic shelter or safe access.
Return height/tan(altitude) and max(0,alleyWidth-shadowLength).
When to use this tool
Use Alley Width Sun Angle Shadow Gap when checking the stated ideal tree-row, shade, buffer or area convention.
How to use the tool and how it works
- Enter alleyWidth, treeHeight, sunAltitude. Use the units and conventions below.
- Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
- Read shadowLength, unshadowedWidth. Use the output convention below.
Require nonnegative alley width/tree height and sunAltitude strictly between 0 and π/2 radians. Return height/tan(altitude) and max(0,alleyWidth-shadowLength).1
| Input field | Meaning and units | Accepted input |
|---|---|---|
| alleyWidth | Alley Width | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| treeHeight | Tree Height | Required. Finite number; minimum 0. |
| sunAltitude | Sun Altitude | Required. Finite number; strictly above 0. |
| Output field | Interpretation | Returned shape |
|---|---|---|
| shadowLength | Shadow Length | Required. Finite number. |
| unshadowedWidth | Unshadowed Width | Required. Finite number. |

} Limitations and assumptions
- Assumes an aligned ideal shadow on a level cross-section; azimuth, terrain and diffuse light are omitted.
- Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
- Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use measured terrain and canopy geometry, appropriate light/flow models and qualified agricultural/engineering assessment for actual layouts and operations.
