Residue Return Nitrogen Basis Tool

Calculate residue return nitrogen basis from explicit caller-supplied inputs.

Description

Return wet*dryFraction*returnedFraction and multiply by dryNitrogenFraction for returned nitrogen.

Agroecological material and density summaries depend on dry/wet mass, seed-component purity, nutrient transformations and sole-crop reference densities. An arithmetic contribution evaluates supplied assumptions without predicting emergence, nutrient availability or a whole-system ecological outcome.

Return wet*dryFraction*returnedFraction and multiply by dryNitrogenFraction for returned nitrogen.

When to use this tool

Use Residue Return Nitrogen Basis when checking the stated residue, seed, nutrient or reference-density basis.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter wetMass, dryFraction, dryNitrogenFraction, returnedFraction. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read returnedDryMass, returnedNitrogen. Use the output convention below.

Require nonnegative wet residue mass and dry, dry-nitrogen and returned fractions in [0,1]. Return wet*dryFraction*returnedFraction and multiply by dryNitrogenFraction for returned nitrogen.1

Limitations and assumptions

  • Nitrogen concentration uses dry residue mass; returned nitrogen is not automatically mineralized or crop-available.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use representative field/laboratory measurements and a complete suitable agroecological model for management decisions and uncertainty.
