Ground Cover Quadrat Contact Fraction

Calculate a point-contact ground-cover fraction with at most one coded cover contact per sampled point.

Description

Calculate supplied ground-cover contact fraction.

Agroecological metrics depend on sampling units, nonoverlapping coverage categories, mass bases and area denominators. Yield per whole plot differs from yield per allocated crop area, and literal crop-code richness per area is not rarefied diversity. Local count expansion assumes comparable density beyond the sampled segment.

Calculate supplied ground-cover contact fraction.

When to use this tool

Use Ground Cover Quadrat Contact Fraction when you already have coverContacts, sampledPoints and need to calculate supplied ground-cover contact fraction.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter coverContacts, sampledPoints. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read contactFraction. Use the output convention below.

Require positive safe sampledPoints and safe coverContacts in [0,sampled]; divide contacts by points.1

Input fieldMeaning and unitsAccepted input
coverContactsCover ContactsRequired. Safe integer; minimum 0.
sampledPointsSampled PointsRequired. Safe integer; minimum 1.

Limitations and assumptions

  • This assumes at most one counted contact per point under the chosen code. No sampling design, detection, species, uncertainty or ecological outcome is verified.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use the complete survey, experiment and ecological analysis. Check detection, spatial variation, sampling representativeness and resource boundaries before interpreting local fractions or supplied labels as ecological benefits or suitable practices.
