Field Residue Cover Point Count

Normalize an explicit covered-point count to a supplied positive point-count denominator without detecting cover from images.

Description

Calculate supplied residue-cover point fraction.

Soil and traction calculations depend on dry-mass versus wet-mass moisture bases, density units, layer thickness and distance conventions. Volumetric water fraction requires dry bulk density, while a single height residual differs from a roughness statistic. Supplied scalar relations do not establish physical plausibility or soil condition.

Calculate supplied residue-cover point fraction.

When to use this tool

Use Field Residue Cover Point Count when you already have coveredPoints, totalPoints and need to calculate supplied residue-cover point fraction.

How to use the tool and how it works

  1. Enter coveredPoints, totalPoints. Use the units and conventions below.
  2. Run the tool. Correct any format, range, or cross-field input error before interpreting the output.
  3. Read coverFraction, uncoveredPoints. Use the output convention below.

Require totalPoints positive safe whole and coveredPoints safe within [0,total]; return covered/total and uncovered total-covered.1

coveredPointsCovered PointsRequired. Safe integer; minimum 0.
totalPointsTotal PointsRequired. Safe integer; minimum 1.

Limitations and assumptions

  • The count fraction does not validate sampling design, identify residue, quantify uncertainty or establish an erosion-control or agronomic outcome.
  • Inputs must satisfy both the field types and the cross-field conditions above. Invalid input causes an error; a successful false flag or documented placeholder is a different result.
  • Numeric calculations use binary floating point unless exact decimal-integer arithmetic is explicitly stated. No hidden measurement tolerance or decimal rounding is added; nonfinite or out-of-contract results are rejected. Numeric signed-zero results are exported as zero.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use complete calibrated measurements, sampling design and physical models. Review density, moisture, heat and traction assumptions before interpreting local fractions or residuals as field performance or appropriate management.
