Thermal Camera Hotspot Area Growth Tracker
Track thresholded physical area and temperature-excess area from calibrated thermal pixels; strict threshold equality is excluded, and emissivity/atmospheric correction or mapped coordinates are caller preprocessing.
Description
Thermal images can track a hotspot's physical area when each pixel has a calibrated ground area.
Thermal images can track a hotspot's physical area when each pixel has a calibrated ground area. Temperature-excess area is a different quantity from radiative power.
Track thresholded physical area and temperature-excess area from calibrated thermal pixels; strict threshold equality is excluded, and emissivity/atmospheric correction or mapped coordinates are caller preprocessing.
When to use Thermal Camera Hotspot Area Growth Tracker
Use this tool to track thresholded physical area and temperature-excess area from calibrated thermal pixels; strict threshold equality is excluded, and emissivity/atmospheric correction or mapped coordinates are caller preprocessing.
Gather the relevant observations and fitted model parameters. Use the stated units and time basis; keep paired observations aligned.
How to use Thermal Camera Hotspot Area Growth Tracker and understand its results
- Gather the relevant observations and fitted model parameters. Use the stated units and time basis; keep paired observations aligned.
- Enter timesDays, pixelTemperaturesByFrameC, pixelAreasM2, callerHotspotThresholdC using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read hotspotAreasM2, hotspotAreaChangeM2PerDay, temperatureExcessAreaIntegralsCM2. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| timesDays | Times days | list of number | Required |
| pixelTemperaturesByFrameC | Pixel temperatures by frame c | list of list of number | Required |
| pixelAreasM2 | Pixel areas m2 | list of number | Required |
| callerHotspotThresholdC | Caller hotspot threshold c | number | Required |
Align increasing frame times with temperature rows and positive pixel areas. Sum areas strictly above the threshold; equality is excluded. Fit area against days and also sum positive temperature excess times area.1
Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths. Each sequence checked for increasing order must contain at least two strictly increasing values. The least-squares fit needs at least two aligned observations and a varying independent variable; a constant dependent variable has reported R² of 1.
area = Σ pixelArea × I(temperature > threshold) Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| hotspotAreasM2 | Hotspot areas m2 | list of number |
| hotspotAreaChangeM2PerDay | Hotspot area change m2 per day | number |
| temperatureExcessAreaIntegralsCM2 | Temperature excess area integrals c m2 | list of number |

} Limitations and assumptions
Emissivity and atmospheric corrections are preprocessing. No geographic footprint or thermal-power calculation is returned.
Numbers and computed results must be finite; overflow produces an error. Matrices are limited to 128 rows and 128 entries per row; other numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Fumarole Temperature Trend Monitoring Tool: Monitor thermometer-calibration-corrected fumarole temperature trend with explicitly linear comparison-time extrapolation; signed slopes/past crossing are retained, and gas-source/eruption attribution is not made. For a complementary task, use Crater Lake Temperature Anomaly Checker: Monitor matched lake/reference temperature differences after a caller seasonal baseline contrast; flags are data anomalies, not evidence of volcanic heating or eruption risk.
