Fumarole Temperature Trend Monitoring Tool

Monitor thermometer-calibration-corrected fumarole temperature trend with explicitly linear comparison-time extrapolation; signed slopes/past crossing are retained, and gas-source/eruption attribution is not made.

Description

A thermometer offset affects both temperature level and trend interpretation.

A thermometer offset affects both temperature level and trend interpretation. A calibrated time series supports a linear comparison-time scenario.

Monitor thermometer-calibration-corrected fumarole temperature trend with explicitly linear comparison-time extrapolation; signed slopes/past crossing are retained, and gas-source/eruption attribution is not made.

When to use Fumarole Temperature Trend Monitoring Tool

Use this tool to monitor thermometer-calibration-corrected fumarole temperature trend with explicitly linear comparison-time extrapolation; signed slopes/past crossing are retained, and gas-source/eruption attribution is not made.

Gather the relevant observations and fitted model parameters. Use the stated units and time basis; keep paired observations aligned.

How to use Fumarole Temperature Trend Monitoring Tool and understand its results

  1. Gather the relevant observations and fitted model parameters. Use the stated units and time basis; keep paired observations aligned.
  2. Enter timesDays, measuredFumaroleTemperaturesC, thermometerCalibrationOffsetsC, comparisonTemperatureC using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read calibrationCorrectedTemperaturesC, fittedTemperatureChangeCPerDay, modelComparisonDay, fitRSquared. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

Align increasing times, measurements and offsets. Regress corrected Celsius temperatures, reject a flat fitted slope, and return slope, comparison day and R². Negative slopes and past crossings remain signed.1

Paired lists must be nonempty and have equal lengths. Each sequence checked for increasing order must contain at least two strictly increasing values. The least-squares fit needs at least two aligned observations and a varying independent variable; a constant dependent variable has reported R² of 1.

corrected temperature = measured − offset; comparison day = (target − intercept)/slope

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Linear extrapolation does not attribute heating to magma or forecast an eruption.

Numbers and computed results must be finite; overflow produces an error. Numeric lists are limited to 100,000 entries; the rules above may require smaller limits. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Crater Lake Temperature Anomaly Checker: Monitor matched lake/reference temperature differences after a caller seasonal baseline contrast; flags are data anomalies, not evidence of volcanic heating or eruption risk. For a complementary task, use SO2 Flux Trend Escalation Checker: Monitor observed SO2 multiplicative growth and extrapolated caller flux timing; model assumes unchanged trend and is not an eruption escalation/alert forecast.
