Lava Dome Growth Rate CMD Calculator
Actual repeated dome surveys corrected for independently established unrelated surface changes, signed shrinkage retained, not eruption flux forecast. Caller independently establishes units, regime, calibration and applicability; this does not establish design-code compliance, authenticity, operational safety, treatment efficacy or a validated forecast.
Description
Repeated lava-dome volumes give interval growth rates only after unrelated surface changes are accounted for.
Repeated lava-dome volumes give interval growth rates only after unrelated surface changes are accounted for.1
Keeping signed changes allows both apparent growth and shrinkage to be inspected.
When to use Lava Dome Growth Rate CMD Calculator
Use this tool when you need to reproduce the stated calculation from measured records or independently selected model inputs. Prepare matched observations and independently established site, specimen, units, datum, and calibration context.
How to use Lava Dome Growth Rate CMD Calculator and understand its results
- Prepare matched observations and independently established site, specimen, units, datum, and calibration context.
- Enter observedDomeSurveyTimesDays, observedMatchedDomeVolumesM3, callerIndependentUnrelatedSurfaceChangesM3, following the field table and rules below, then run the tool.
- Read correctedIntervalDomeGrowthM3Day. Use the output meanings below to interpret units, signs, flags, and any nested result fields.
- Correct reported input issues and run again. For a successful result, check the stated evidence coverage and assumptions before using it in your review.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| observedDomeSurveyTimesDays | Observed dome survey times days | list of number | Required |
| observedMatchedDomeVolumesM3 | Observed matched dome volumes m3 | list of number | Required |
| callerIndependentUnrelatedSurfaceChangesM3 | Caller independent unrelated surface changes m3 | list of number | Required |
Use at least two strictly increasing survey times in days with aligned nonnegative dome volumes in cubic metres. Supply exactly one signed unrelated-change correction per interval. Subtract that correction from the observed volume difference before dividing by elapsed days.
growth_i = (V_(i+1)−V_i−unrelatedChange_i)/(t_(i+1)−t_i) Symbols follow the input and output meanings and the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| correctedIntervalDomeGrowthM3Day | Corrected interval dome growth m3 day | list of number |

} Limitations and assumptions
Interpretation requires independently matched observations, units, site or specimen, and calibration. The calculation does not establish geological identity, operating safety, or an eruption forecast.
Missing required fields, unknown fields, wrong types, and violated calculation rules are input issues. Numeric values must be finite; nonfinite results are rejected. Evidence arrays must be dense, with no missing cells. Numeric observation lists allow at most 10,000 entries, subject to any smaller bounds stated above.
Alternative or Complementary methods
For a related review, use Caldera Resurgence Uplift Rate Calculator: Caldera resurgence surveys can contain both dome motion and reference motion. Fitting the dome-minus-stable-reference elevation series estimates a signed relative uplift trend. For a complementary step, use Sector Collapse Scarp Volume Estimate Calculator: Source scarps and avalanche deposits describe different parts of a collapse. Integrating mapped source cross sections gives a source volume; multiplying by a supplied bulking ratio creates a separate deposit scenario.
