Caldera Resurgence Uplift Rate Calculator
Actual dome versus independently matched stable-reference elevation changes over time, not geological source interpretation or geodesy transform. Caller independently establishes units, regime, calibration and applicability; this does not establish design-code compliance, authenticity, operational safety, treatment efficacy or a validated forecast.
Description
Caldera resurgence surveys can contain both dome motion and reference motion.
Caldera resurgence surveys can contain both dome motion and reference motion.1
Fitting the dome-minus-stable-reference elevation series estimates a signed relative uplift trend.
When to use Caldera Resurgence Uplift Rate Calculator
Use this tool when you need to reproduce the stated calculation from measured records or independently selected model inputs. Prepare matched observations and independently established site, specimen, units, datum, and calibration context.
How to use Caldera Resurgence Uplift Rate Calculator and understand its results
- Prepare matched observations and independently established site, specimen, units, datum, and calibration context.
- Enter observedResurgentSurveyTimesYears, observedDomeRelativeElevationMm, observedStableReferenceRelativeElevationMm, following the field table and rules below, then run the tool.
- Read referenceCorrectedResurgenceMmYear, referenceCorrectedTrendRSquared. Use the output meanings below to interpret units, signs, flags, and any nested result fields.
- Correct reported input issues and run again. For a successful result, check the stated evidence coverage and assumptions before using it in your review.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| observedResurgentSurveyTimesYears | Observed resurgent survey times years | list of number | Required |
| observedDomeRelativeElevationMm | Observed dome relative elevation mm | list of number | Required |
| observedStableReferenceRelativeElevationMm | Observed stable reference relative elevation mm | list of number | Required |
Use at least two aligned survey times in years and dome and stable-reference elevations in millimetres. Subtract reference elevation from dome elevation at each time, then perform ordinary least squares. Times must have nonzero variance; they need not be sorted. Report slope in millimetres per year and R², with constant response assigned R²=1.
corrected_i=dome_i−reference_i; rate=Cov(time,corrected)/Var(time) Symbols follow the input and output meanings and the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| referenceCorrectedResurgenceMmYear | Reference corrected resurgence mm year | number |
| referenceCorrectedTrendRSquared | Reference corrected trend R² | number |

Interpretation requires independently matched observations, units, site or specimen, and calibration. The calculation does not establish geological identity, operating safety, or an eruption forecast.
Missing required fields, unknown fields, wrong types, and violated calculation rules are input issues. Numeric values must be finite; nonfinite results are rejected. Evidence arrays must be dense, with no missing cells. Numeric observation lists allow at most 10,000 entries, subject to any smaller bounds stated above.
Alternative or Complementary methods
For a related review, use Resurgent Dome Tilt Microradians Calculator: A differential rise measured over a horizontal baseline defines an angular tilt. Using the arctangent retains the finite-angle geometry instead of treating rise divided by baseline as an exact angle. For a complementary step, use Lava Dome Growth Rate CMD Calculator: Repeated lava-dome volumes give interval growth rates only after unrelated surface changes are accounted for. Keeping signed changes allows both apparent growth and shrinkage to be inspected.
