PFIC Distribution Tax

Estimate PFIC excess-distribution tax using caller-supplied classifications and rate.

Description

A PFIC distribution scenario isolates a supplied ordinary amount from the total distribution, then adds a supplied interest charge to tax on the excess.

Estimate PFIC excess-distribution tax using caller-supplied classifications and rate.

When to use PFIC Distribution Tax

Use this tool to estimate PFIC excess-distribution tax using caller-supplied classifications and rate.

Choose the specific arithmetic or checklist scenario and establish its input amounts, dates, rates and criteria from the applicable records. Keep currencies, periods and jurisdictions consistent; review the tool-specific assumptions before interpreting the result.

How to use PFIC Distribution Tax and understand its results

  1. Choose the specific arithmetic or checklist scenario and establish its input amounts, dates, rates and criteria from the applicable records. Keep currencies, periods and jurisdictions consistent; review the tool-specific assumptions before interpreting the result.
  2. Enter distributionAmount, ordinaryDistributionAmount, excessTaxRatePercent, interestCharge using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
  3. Read excessDistribution, distributionTax, totalTaxAndInterest. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
  4. If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.

distributionAmountPFIC distributionnumber; minimum: 0Required
ordinaryDistributionAmountOrdinary distribution portionnumber; minimum: 0Required
excessTaxRatePercentCaller excess-distribution rate (%)number; minimum: 0; maximum: 100Required
interestChargeCaller interest chargenumber; minimum: 0Required

Enter nonnegative distribution, ordinary portion and interest with rate in 0–100. Return excess, tax and combined tax/interest. Interest is added even when excess is zero.

excess=max(0,distribution−ordinaryAmount); total=excess×rate/100+interestCharge

Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.

Limitations and assumptions

Historical allocation, holding periods, elections and statutory excess-distribution computation are not implemented. All component assumptions must be established separately.

Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors.

Alternative or Complementary methods

Use Refund Delay: Estimate simple interest from caller-supplied refund delay and interest assumptions. For a complementary task, use Collectibles Gain Tax: Estimate tax on a positive collectible gain using a caller-supplied rate.
