MPG Threshold Screen
Compare combined fuel economy with a caller-supplied tax threshold.
Description
A fuel-economy threshold screen compares a combined MPG value with a supplied minimum.
A fuel-economy threshold screen compares a combined MPG value with a supplied minimum. The signed margin explains which side of the criterion the value lies on.1
Compare combined fuel economy with a caller-supplied tax threshold.
When to use MPG Threshold Screen
Use this tool to compare combined fuel economy with a caller-supplied tax threshold.
Choose the specific arithmetic or checklist scenario and establish its input amounts, dates, rates and criteria from the applicable records. Keep currencies, periods and jurisdictions consistent; review the tool-specific assumptions before interpreting the result.
How to use MPG Threshold Screen and understand its results
- Choose the specific arithmetic or checklist scenario and establish its input amounts, dates, rates and criteria from the applicable records. Keep currencies, periods and jurisdictions consistent; review the tool-specific assumptions before interpreting the result.
- Enter combinedMpg, minimumMpg using the field table and calculation rules, then run the tool.
- Read mpgMargin, meetsThreshold, classification. The explanation below defines the units, signs, ordering and any flags or placeholder values.
- If the tool reports an input issue, correct the values and run it again. Apply the stated assumptions when interpreting a successfully returned result.
| Input field | Meaning | Value type; see rules below | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| combinedMpg | Combined fuel economy (mpg) | number; minimum: 0 | Required |
| minimumMpg | Minimum fuel economy (mpg) | number; minimum: 0 | Required |
Enter nonnegative MPG and minimum criterion. Return margin, inclusive threshold flag and meets/below classification.
margin=combinedMpg−minimumMpg; meets=margin≥0 Units, indexing, boundary conditions and exceptional cases are defined in the calculation rules above.
| Output field | Meaning | Value type |
|---|---|---|
| mpgMargin | MPG margin (mpg) | number |
| meetsThreshold | Meets threshold | boolean |
| classification | Threshold classification | string; one of "meets", "below" |

} Limitations and assumptions
It does not perform a fuel-economy test, classify a vehicle or calculate a statutory gas-guzzler tax.
Numeric inputs must be finite. Follow the calculation-specific rules for overflow, underflow and exceptional cases. Missing required fields, extra fields, wrong value types and violations of the calculation rules are input errors. A successfully returned false flag is an evaluated outcome; its meaning is explained above.
Alternative or Complementary methods
Use Highway Vehicle Tax: Prorate a caller-supplied annual highway vehicle tax by taxable months. For a complementary task, use Mileage Depreciation: Split a standard-mileage deduction into depreciation and non-depreciation components.
